Action Scheduler is a scalable, traceable job queue for background processing large sets of actions in WordPress, designed to be distributed in WordPress plugins. It triggers an action hook to run at some time in the future. Each hook can be scheduled with unique data, which lets callbacks perform operations on that data, and a hook can run on one or more occasions. It works like an extension to do_action() that adds the ability to delay and repeat a hook.

Every month it processes millions of payments for WooCommerce Subscriptions, webhooks for WooCommerce, and emails and other events for other plugins. It has been seen on live sites processing queues of more than 50,000 jobs and running resource intensive operations like payment processing and order creation at a sustained rate of over 10,000 per hour without negatively impacting normal site operations.
