Action Scheduler is a scalable, traceable job queue for background processing large sets of actions in WordPress. It is designed to be distributed in WordPress plugins. It triggers an action hook to run at some time in the future. Each hook can be scheduled with unique data so callbacks can perform operations on that data, and a hook can be set to run on one or more occasions. Think of it as an extension to do_action() that can delay and repeat a hook.

The queue is battle-tested. Every month it processes millions of payments for WooCommerce Subscriptions, webhooks for WooCommerce, and emails and other events for a range of other plugins. On live sites it has handled queues of more than 50,000 jobs, running resource intensive operations like processing payments and creating orders at a sustained rate of over 10,000 per hour without negatively impacting normal site operations.

It suits plugins that need background processing, especially of large sets of tasks.
