Description:
Action Scheduler is a scalable, traceable job queue for background processing large sets of actions in WordPress. It is designed to be distributed in WordPress plugins. It triggers an action hook to run at some time in the future. Each hook can be scheduled with unique data so callbacks can perform operations on that data, and a hook can run on one or more occasions. It is like an extension to do_action() that adds the ability to delay and repeat a hook.
It suits plugins needing background processing, especially of large sets of tasks. Every month it processes millions of payments for WooCommerce Subscriptions, webhooks for WooCommerce, and emails and other events for a range of other plugins. Live sites have run queues of more than 50,000 jobs, with resource intensive operations like payment processing and order creation sustained at over 10,000 per hour without disrupting normal site operations. This happens on infrastructure and WordPress sites outside the control of the plugin author.
Documentation at ActionScheduler.org covers installation and usage, running at scale via WP CLI, the complete API reference, managing scheduled actions in the administration screen, and background processing at scale with the default WP Cron queue runner. Automattic develops and maintains it, with significant early development by Flightless.
