Description:
wpDiscuz 7, the WordPress comment plugin, comes with built-in Google reCAPTCHA version 2, the widget that asks visitors to confirm they are not a robot with a single click. It protects website comments from spam and abuse while letting real people pass through with ease, so a significant number of your users can attest they are human without having to solve a CAPTCHA. Commenters who prefer the latest version 3, the invisible Google reCAPTCHA, can use the wpDiscuz reCAPTCHA addon, which makes life easier by removing even the version 2 checkbox.
Setup starts on the reCAPTCHA admin page. After installing or updating wpDiscuz 7, navigate to Dashboard, wpDiscuz, Settings, reCAPTCHA and configure the Site Keys to enable the protection. Before using reCAPTCHA you should register your domain with Google to obtain the Site Key and Secret Key for reCAPTCHA version 2, then insert those keys into the corresponding fields of that admin page. The keys must be created for version 2, not for version 3, because incorrect key configuration is the most common reason reCAPTCHA stops working.
Several options control where the check appears. Enable for Guests turns reCAPTCHA on for not logged-in users, and the documentation recommends keeping it enabled because guests are the main spamming point. Enable for Logged-in Users was added at the request of a few wpDiscuz users, but the developers do not recommend bothering authorized users with it. Display on Subscription Form adds reCAPTCHA to the Subscription Bar, a form that can also be attacked by spammers and therefore needs protection too.
Appearance and troubleshooting are handled on the same page. The reCAPTCHA widget has light and dark styles, so you can choose whichever fits your theme. The language setting usually needs no attention, because reCAPTCHA detects the browser language and loads all phrases according to that language. The Request Method option is set to Auto by default and exists to be changed if reCAPTCHA does not work on your website. The documentation advises changing it only after checking the API keys or contacting support, and not at all if you are not familiar with it.
