Newsletter Import and Export is an addon for The Newsletter Plugin that lets you bring subscriber contacts into your WordPress newsletter from outside sources. It works in a few easy steps: you can import from a CSV file, an Excel file, or simply copy and paste a set of contacts from a list. The workflow is straightforward. First you select the type of import, choosing between files in CSV or Excel format or pasted contacts. If you import from a file, you upload it and it is stored temporarily. You then check the parsed content to confirm the file can be read correctly, with the various fields such as email, first name and last name distinguished for you. Next you map the fields in your file to the subscriber fields, and custom fields can be imported as well. During mapping you can assign specific lists, import with a specific status such as confirmed or not confirmed, and decide how already present subscribers should be handled. Finally you start the import, watch the progress, and at the end a summary table shows how many subscribers have been processed.
The importer is built to handle large lists of contacts. It processes them in small batches to avoid limits on memory or execution time that your provider may impose, and in some circumstances splitting the list can help. If a contact already exists, you define the behavior during field mapping: you can skip it, update it with the new data, or completely override it. You can also stop the import process at any moment.
Two details are worth knowing. The welcome email and the activation email are not sent to imported subscribers, but you can later create a newsletter to welcome them, for example by adding them to a list, or a newsletter acting as an activation email, with more detail available in the documentation. The uploaded file is stored temporarily in your blog space and deleted as soon as the import ends or is stopped, and the file is never sent to external services.
