Description:
Action Scheduler is a scalable, traceable job queue for background processing large sets of actions in WordPress. Built to be distributed in WordPress plugins, it works by triggering an action hook to run at some time in the future. Each hook can be scheduled with unique data so callbacks can operate on that data, and a hook can run on one or more occasions. It acts like an extension to do_action() that adds the ability to delay and repeat a hook.
Each month it processes millions of payments for WooCommerce Subscriptions, webhooks for WooCommerce, and emails and other events for other plugins. On live sites it has handled queues of more than 50,000 jobs, running resource intensive work such as processing payments and creating orders at a sustained rate of over 10,000 per hour without negatively impacting normal site operations. This happens on infrastructure and WordPress sites outside the control of the plugin author.
Plugins that need background processing, especially of large sets of tasks, can use it. Documentation at ActionScheduler.org covers usage, running the queue at scale via WP CLI, the API functions, the administration screen for scheduled actions, and background processing at scale via the WP Cron queue runner. The project is developed and maintained by Automattic, with significant early development by Flightless.
