Description:

Action Scheduler is a scalable, traceable job queue for background processing large sets of actions in WordPress, designed to be distributed in plugins. It works by triggering an action hook to run at some time in the future, like an extension to do_action() that adds the ability to delay and repeat a hook. Each hook can be scheduled with unique data so callbacks can operate on that data, and it can run once or on multiple occasions.

Plugins that need background processing of large sets of tasks can use it. Every month it processes millions of payments for WooCommerce Subscriptions, webhooks for WooCommerce, and emails and other events for a range of other plugins. On live sites outside the plugin author's control, it has processed queues of more than 50,000 jobs and run resource intensive operations such as payment processing and order creation at a sustained rate of over 10,000 per hour without negatively impacting normal site operations.
