BuddyPress Friendship Restrictions is a WordPress plugin that lets site admins control how the friends feature works on a BuddyPress site. It allows you to decide who can send friendship requests, who can be added as a friend, how many requests are allowed, and how many friends a member can have. The plugin is aimed at community owners and admins who want to keep the friendship system in line with their own rules instead of leaving it open to every member.

Restrictions can be applied by user role, so admins can choose which roles may send requests and which roles may be added as friends. Request throttling limits how many friendship requests a member can send within a specified duration, and a maximum number of friends can be set for the site. Version 1.1.0 rewrote the plugin to support restrictions per role or per member type, which makes it flexible for a wide variety of use cases. The plugin can also be extended easily through filters.

The current release is version 1.1.6, published on 20 February 2024. It has been tested with BuddyPress 12.2.0 and is compatible with BuddyPress 8.0 and above. The plugin also supports the BuddyBoss Platform. According to the developers, future updates will allow setting limits for individual roles.
