Description:
Taxonomy_MetaData is a WordPress helper class for saving pseudo-metadata for taxonomy terms. It is aimed at WordPress developers who need to add fields to taxonomies such as categories or tags. The class is instantiated with a taxonomy name, an array of field definitions, and an optional settings heading. Each field can define a label, a sanitization callback, a render callback, an optional description, and optional placeholder text.
Saved data is retrieved with static get calls. One call returns all meta for a taxonomy term, and passing a meta key returns a specific piece of term meta data. An extended class is included for using CMB2 to generate the form fields, which is handy if you need more advanced fields or do not want to create your own render callbacks. The third parameter can override the get, set, and delete options callbacks so that a plugin like wp-large-options can be used, which the readme recommends for a very large number of terms.
The readme states that this class should no longer be used, because term meta is now in WordPress core and CMB2 supports it. The GitHub repository was archived by the owner on Feb 15, 2024 and is now read-only. The class was originally inspired by an article on saving taxonomy meta data as an options array in WordPress.
The vendor’s own page for Taxonomy_MetaData has the full details.
